Taconite is an iron bearing, high silica, flint-like rock. It is a
sedimentary rock with iron rich and shale or chert layers. The iron
content is 25 to 30%. To process taconite, ore is ground into a fine
powder and the iron (magnetite) is separated from the waste rock using
strong magnets. The magnetite is combined with bentonite clay and limestone as a flux and rolled into pellets about one centimeter in diameter. The pellets are heated to very high temperatures to oxidize the magnetite (Fe3O4) to hematite (Fe2O3) which hardens them for shipping. The pellets are used in blast furnaces where their uniform composition and size contributes to iron making efficiency.
