Global Positioning
System:
GPS is a worldwide radio-navigation system formed from a constellation
of 25 satellites and their ground stations. GPS allows us to get an
exact longitude and latitude anywhere on earth with a high degree of
accuracy.
Magnetometer:
The magnetometer is a device that can locate ferrous metal objects above
or below the sea bottom. It is useful in locating cables, pipelines,
etc.
Sub-Bottom
Profiler:
Sub-bottom profiling systems utilize the principle of seismic reflection.A
sub-bottom profiler is a type of sonar that can image geology and man-made
artifacts which lie beneath the sea bed.
Side Scan Sonar:
Side scan sonar is a method of underwater imaging using narrow beams
of acoustic energy (sound) transmitted out to the side of the towfish
and across the bottom. Sound is reflected back from the bottom and from
objects to the towfish. The data is then sent via a cable to a topside
computer where it is processed and turned into a image. This system
is useful in mapping the sea floor.
